Highgate encourages all of its pupils to branch out and take advantage of the opportunities to enrich themselves with the many extra-curricular activities on offer. Here's just a selection of some of the exciting things that happen at Highgate.

A Story of Success
Every year Highgate hosts the island-wide Creative Writing competition, which consists of reading sessions, story telling, creative writing workshops and the award ceremony itself. The event is one of the literary highlights of the year and we're proud that Highgate is the hub of the activities. The event is held as part of Book Week, with guest authors attending to explain their works and their love of a good story.

Breaking Boundaries
Highgate recently had the honour of representing Cyprus on the international stage. A school link project meant Highgate, alongside a school from the Turkish Cypriot community, took part in a three-day seminar with other European schools. The seminar was designed to allow the schools to discuss the type of activities they would like to work on together and took place in the UK.

On a similar note of cooperation, Highgate is undertaking Comenius projects with partner schools across Europe. As part of this, tasks have included the creation of a multi-lingual phrase book, a recipe book to share culinary cultures and even a song written in the languages of the participating countries. Encouraging interaction across boundaries and borders, the project celebrates cultural diversity and empowers our young people to be active and responsible citizens.

Hitting the Right Note
The School Choir successfully participates in many community events, including raising funds for various charities at Eleftheria Square each Christmas.

A Podium Finish
Beyond the importance placed on P.E. within the curriculum, the children compete in sports events against other primary schools and use up lots of physical energy in the after school activities. The annual Sports Day is always popular with pupils competing in a wide range of fun events.

Seeding Change
Highgate is a member of the pan-European 'Eco-Schools' project. With the current political and scientific issues around climate change, the school undertakes activities encouraging its students to become active citizens when it comes to the environment.

A Star of Wonder
The annual Christmas concert is always an event to behold, with the number of pupils cast in the hundreds! Their enthusiasm, talent and love of drama, music and dance always brings a warm glow to the season's festivities.

Day Tripper
Throughout the year, the school organises educational trips to a number of different locations. These have included mountain climbing, photography trips, sailing, long weekends at the Environment Centre in Akamas, as well as exchange trips abroad. In each case, parents are provided with details of the trips and are asked to return a permission slip.

Working by Association
Highgate has always maintained a close relationship with parents and the Parent Teacher Association is very active in organising a number of events throughout the year. Funds raised by the PTA will be contributed back to the school to purchase items over and above school necessities.

After School Clubs

Highgate offers a wide range of free and fee-paying clubs from 1:30pm until 2:15pm, Monday to Thursday.  Clubs are provided at each Key Stage to ensure age appropriate activities and supervision.

Children choose their clubs in September and again in February. Due to the popularity of some clubs, we offer a maximum of 18 spaces on a first come, first served basis.

Some popular free clubs choices include:

  • Italian Club
  • Art Club
  • Sports Club
  • Football Club
  • Greek Crafts Club
  • Singing/Karaoke Club
  • Book Club
  • Drama Club
  • Enterprise Club
  • Board Games Club
  • Play-script Writing Club
  • Newspaper Club
  • Country Dancing Club
  • Chess Club
  • Just Dance Club
  • Music and Media Club

Usually, the teachers suggest the clubs they would like to run, however, our active pupil council also makes suggestions on behalf of the students and we do our best to accommodate their ideas.

My name is Thusi and I have been at Highgate for 9 years. I like the teachers at my school, who are friendly and teach in a fun way. You know everyone here. You can mix with students of different age groups.
My name is Nefeli. I am in year 9. The school is small but I think that the reason we are all so happy is because we all know each other. Small groups are beneficial because we learn so much better and we get a lot of personal attention.
My name is Kyle. I am in in year 9. Everyone is friendly, respectful towards each other. We are an international school from different places of the globe. All the activities that the school offers are really great and most of us feel that everyone in our community cares. The school offers homework club and many out of school activities. It is such a positive environment.

When I enter the school gates I am important, as this community is part of all of us. I have many friends, and everyone cares for each other. We all get individual attention, and all the teachers inspire and support us. My school is like a home to me and to all of us students. We are so lucky to be here.
My name is Mutasem. I have just joined the school and I already made many friends.
A friendly atmosphere, a caring and safe environment. The School has managed to bring together young, energetic, qualified, knowledgeable and dedicated teachers, specialists and admin staff. The support of teachers has been individual and outstanding. My son has now developed new healthy and balanced lifestyle habits and his self-confidence has grown significantly.

My children are in Highgate for the 5th year and they love it. Academic side is very good, teachers are professional and really love children. There are also many after school and during school activities for general child development. The environment in the school is very friendly and family like. I can see from my kids that they are taught to love learning not just for the grades. Also what I like about the school is that each child is individual and is seen as individual.
Natalia Polyntseva | Parent
My child has developed so many skills within a relatively short time and his progress is tremendous. The head-teacher is always accessible and willing to practically support parents and pupils. Private education at its best!

Pubic Speaking: Pubic Speaking was really good for me. It actually did help me a lot. Ok, it didn't get me more self-confidence because i already have too much hehe , but it did teach me a lesson about life.
Alvaro Hergueta Year 8
Pubic Speaking: For me, the public speaking course was not only enlightening, showing me techniques for speaking to a large crowd, small group or even individuals which I was previously oblivious to, but also allowed me to understand how I as an individual needed to prepare for a speech. Finally, the course also helped me control my nerves when speaking publicly. I found the tutorial very helpful, and actually, unexpectedly quite enjoyable. In my opinion, the hands on approach of Mr. Leonidas and the school's administration assisted our improvement greatly.
Chloe Savvidou Year 10
Pubic Speaking: Public speaking was a great experience that allowed me to be truly dependent on myself after practising over and over again, working through the problems that we encountered. It truly was a fun and extremely important life lesson to learn.
Jonny Hart Year 9
