The Buckingham Postgraduate Certificate of Education has been developed as a bespoke course to suit the needs of teachers in independent and international schools. The course aims to give these teachers a formal teaching qualification which is recognised throughout the UK, Scotland and in various countries worldwide. This course will enable teachers to become accomplished professionals and equip them to move forward with confidence in their future career. The PGCE is offered to teachers in all subjects and at all levels who are employed within a school and who have class contact for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The course begins in September and ends in June of the following year. Application forms are to be found on the University of Buckingham website at
Candidate for the course should be endorsed by their school as part of the selection process. During the course they will receive school-based training in the skills of the classroom and will be overseen and supported by mentors in their schools. Teachers and mentors will also have access to a virtual learning environment which will provide a rich source of resources for the course. They will be visited by an experienced tutor from Buckingham, who will help to ensure comparability of standards across both UK and international participating schools. The Buckingham tutor and the school mentor will jointly assess the student's competence as a teacher during and at the end of the course.
In addition to the school-based programme, teachers on the IPGCE come to Buckingham in each of the Autumn and Spring terms for a three day residential meeting, where they will reflect more systematically on the subjects they are teaching, the skills of the classroom and their own understanding of pedagogical principles. They will also write 3 essays on the theory and practice of education.
What our Students Say:
We monitor carefully our teachers’ reaction to our courses and their feedback is always encouraging and even, on occasion, flattering. Teachers commonly praise the support that they have been given throughout the course by their University tutors and appreciate both the academic rigour of the course and the economic advantage in being able to qualify as a professional teacher whilst in post.
 Our Staff:
1. Geraint Jones, Dean of Education
2. Dr Hazel Agnew, Director of International Development
3. Nicola McEwan, Director of Training
4. Professor Anthony O’Hear is a professional philosopher and a former government advisor on education
5. Nicola Mugford, Education Office manager
6. Sally Elvin, Marketing, PR and Senior Administrative Officer
The Assessment Only Route(AOR) to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
The University of Buckingham now offers a route for teachers in both UK and International schools to achieve Qualified Teacher Status whilst in post in their own school. This qualification befits a teacher to be able to work in state sector schools in England. This assessment route is open to eligible teachers who have worked in teaching for at least two years, in at least two different schools and who are able to work across two age phases. During the assessment period the teacher must have a timetable covering at least two ages phases e.g. EY/KS1, KS1/LKS2, LKS2/UKS2, KS3/KS4. The assessment period lasts for a maximum of 12 weeks. To read more about the AOR and for application forms go to http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/education/teacher-training and select the primary or secondary tab on the left.

My name is Thusi and I have been at Highgate for 9 years. I like the teachers at my school, who are friendly and teach in a fun way. You know everyone here. You can mix with students of different age groups.
My name is Nefeli. I am in year 9. The school is small but I think that the reason we are all so happy is because we all know each other. Small groups are beneficial because we learn so much better and we get a lot of personal attention.
My name is Kyle. I am in in year 9. Everyone is friendly, respectful towards each other. We are an international school from different places of the globe. All the activities that the school offers are really great and most of us feel that everyone in our community cares. The school offers homework club and many out of school activities. It is such a positive environment.

When I enter the school gates I am important, as this community is part of all of us. I have many friends, and everyone cares for each other. We all get individual attention, and all the teachers inspire and support us. My school is like a home to me and to all of us students. We are so lucky to be here.
My name is Mutasem. I have just joined the school and I already made many friends.
A friendly atmosphere, a caring and safe environment. The School has managed to bring together young, energetic, qualified, knowledgeable and dedicated teachers, specialists and admin staff. The support of teachers has been individual and outstanding. My son has now developed new healthy and balanced lifestyle habits and his self-confidence has grown significantly.

My children are in Highgate for the 5th year and they love it. Academic side is very good, teachers are professional and really love children. There are also many after school and during school activities for general child development. The environment in the school is very friendly and family like. I can see from my kids that they are taught to love learning not just for the grades. Also what I like about the school is that each child is individual and is seen as individual.

My child has developed so many skills within a relatively short time and his progress is tremendous. The head-teacher is always accessible and willing to practically support parents and pupils. Private education at its best!

Pubic Speaking: Pubic Speaking was really good for me. It actually did help me a lot. Ok, it didn't get me more self-confidence because i already have too much hehe , but it did teach me a lesson about life.
Alvaro Hergueta Year 8
Pubic Speaking: For me, the public speaking course was not only enlightening, showing me techniques for speaking to a large crowd, small group or even individuals which I was previously oblivious to, but also allowed me to understand how I as an individual needed to prepare for a speech. Finally, the course also helped me control my nerves when speaking publicly. I found the tutorial very helpful, and actually, unexpectedly quite enjoyable. In my opinion, the hands on approach of Mr. Leonidas and the school's administration assisted our improvement greatly.
Chloe Savvidou Year 10
Pubic Speaking: Public speaking was a great experience that allowed me to be truly dependent on myself after practising over and over again, working through the problems that we encountered. It truly was a fun and extremely important life lesson to learn.
